Auchentoshan 18 yo (43%, OB, +/-2023) One of many model’s mottos is ‘Difficult to say, simple to drink’. This 18 is totally ex-bourbon and to the query ‘What offers whisky its color?’ their official web site solutions, ‘Our cautious and methodical maturing course of over the course of 18 years’ however it’s certainly c*r*m*l*s*d (mit Farbstoff on German bottles). Having mentioned that, we quite preferred little Auchentoshan 18 final time we tried it, in 2017 (WF 82). Color: gold. Nostril: it is fairly dry and leafy, not that simple, with first some oak shavings and sawdust, and solely then gummy bears and marshmallows, rooibos tea… But it surely stays drier than earlier than and even a notch metallic (outdated tin field). Mouth: once more, somewhat leafy and drying at first, then on cider apples, peel, allspice, ginger, turmeric… The distillate would not appear to have a lot to say, we’re fairly removed from the distillery’s older expression, to not point out the improbable sherried ones that they used to have… like twenty-five years in the past. Bear in mind these very singular diamond-shaped labels that used to set them aside? End: somewhat quick, however higher, fruitier, with some oranges. However the aftertaste remained quite leafy and tea-ish, somewhat bitter. Feedback: I imagine the indies are having the higher ones lately, let’s verify that… SGP:451 – 80 factors. |

Auchentoshan 24 yo 1998/2022 (54%, Asta Morris, Heritage, bourbon cask, cask #AM166, 164 bottles) Color: straw. Nostril: its filled with muesli, with bits of mangos, clementines and oranges inside. That is one thing that works, whereas it could then grow to be very floral, with some ylang-ylang, roses, honeysuckle and wisteria. Auchentoshan as in Auchentoshan, I might say. With water: a quite excellent oranges and custard combo. Mouth (neat): a really uncommon perfumy arrival, fairly sizzling. Bergamot and orange blossom water. One thing by Dior, maybe? (at random)… Then peach peal and patchouli. With water: there, Juicy Fruit and all-vitamin juice, recent peach pulp, Bellini… And even somewhat mango sherbet, which I additionally discover very Auchentoshan. End: medium, somewhat leafier, extra peely… Cherry stem tea. Feedback: excellent and true to the distillate; that is the place an official 18 ought to be in my e-book. SGP: 651 – 89 factors. |
